Speaking of tooling up for new technology, much of the gear at your DSL provider's central office may not be ready for prime time in supporting fancy apps like video-on-demand and voice over DSL (VoDSL). Analog Devices is now pushing its sixth-generation xDSL chipset for ADSL central office (CO) applications, which may enable new tech advances by taking up less room in devices and consuming less power. AD's Anaconda xDSL chipset is a 16-port central office gadget that has an integrated line driver/receiver and consumes 1.15 watts per port. It occupies 1.1 inches per port, which the company says decreases physical size 30 percent. Anaconda accommodates high-density line cards for voice switches, DSLAMs (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexers) and DLC (Digital Loop Carriers).
