100GB Desktop Backup for USB 2.0

by - source: Tom's Hardware

Portable backup devices have come a long way since the heyday of Zip drives. It's mostly because they've had to. The hard drive capacity of our computers has gotten exponentially larger so we need high capacity backup solutions that won't take all day to ensure that our data is safely copied to a secondary device. We've seen a number of different devices recently and, without reviewing them, it looks on the surface that you now have a bunch of backup options regardless of whether you like USB 1.1, USB 2.0, or FireWire. Here's another. CMS Peripherals Just let us know that it is expanding the capacity of its portable Desktop Automatic Backup System (ABS) for Windows98/Me and 2000 users to 100GB, along with providing USB 2.0 support. And, like some other companies, CMS is also now offering a new line of PCI cards that will give you two USB 2.0 ports. USB 2.0 provides for up to 480MBps data transfer rates while giving you backward compatibility to first generation USB devices (regular readers have heard that song and dance before, but maybe it's your first day here). The Desktop ABS lets you backup and share files among multiple USB-enabled notebooks, desktops, and workstations. Once connected, the unit has an automatic launcher technology that initiates either a full or incremental backup (as designated by the user). The Desktop ABS is available now in capacities of 20GB, 40GB, 60GB, 80GB and 100GB with a three-year warranty. Estimated street prices (ESP) range from $399 for the 20GB solution, to $1,099 for 100GB. CMS's USB 2.0 PCI cards have a one-year warranty and an estimated street price of $39.95.
