1.3 billion SOC units per year by 2004?

The system-on-chip (SOC) market has become an increasingly important part of the IC industry as electronic applications other than computers have increased. A new study by Cahners In-Stat Group projects that SOCs, chips with embedded processors, memory and other features, will surpass a billion units per year by 2004. Last year's numbers were approximately 345 million units with almost 40 percent used by communications devices. That sector is expected to lead the market's growth.
