It's interesting that AMD's latest mobile processors sport GHz ratings instead of quirky number-based non-GHz names like the new Athlon XP 1900+ . I thought they were getting away from the old "GHz equals performance" idea. Well, naming conventions aside, AMD just turned loose the new 1.2GHz mobile AMD Athlon 4 and 950MHz mobile AMD Duron processors with PowerNow! power management. AMD says that both mobile processors are compatible with Windows XP if you're among the few who've dared to install the OS. Compaq will push forth PCs based on the new processors later this quarter in its Compaq Presario 700 notebook series. The 1.2GHz AMD mobile Athlon 4 processor is priced at $525 and the 950MHz mobile AMD Duron processor is priced at $160, in 1,000-unit quantities. The mobile Athlon 4 processor features 384 kB of on-chip cache with hardware data pre-fetch (256 kB of on-chip level (L2) cache and 128 kBytes of on-chip level (L1) cache), a superscalar floating-point unit, and support for AMD's 3DNow! Professional instruction set. It supports the 200MHz Athlon front-side bus and is manufactured using AMD's 0.18-micron copper process technology in Fab 30 in Dresden, Germany. The new mobile Duron processor features 192 kB of total on-chip cache and data pre-fetch, a 200MHz front-side bus, and a superscalar floating point unit with support for AMD's 3DNow! Professional technology.
