Here's an interesting development that hails from the SID Symposium: an LCD that supposedly looks like black ink on white paper instead of the usual floating black liquid on a khaki background. Three-Five Systems has just started sampling its newly developed "paperwhite" liquid crystal displays that reportedly achieve just such an effect. Three-Five thinks its new LCD is just right for manufacturers of PDAs, data collection devices, and other handheld terminals such as e-books. Samples are already on the street and volume production is expected to begin later this year. All we need now is for the displays to exude a "virtual book smell."
